I don't know if it's the fresh Denmark outlook of trees (and more trees), the positive ion-charged sea air floating across the ocean from Antarctica or the sweet-tasting rain water for drinking, but something made everyone walking around the Chimes Spa Retreat in Denmark seem like they were walking on clouds.
Then my partner and I underwent the Chimes spa experience for couples and it was easy to understand why the boutique retreat has earned multiple awards, its five star luxury rating and a reputation for delivering on its mission to "provide a nurturing caring oasis away from a hectic world."
Chimes Spa Retreat is located in Denmark in the middle of the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia. It's an adult retreat that caters mainly for couples. With just ten spacious and comfortable suites, the lodge is all about indulgence, attention to detail and warm, personalised service. It offers the opportunity to share the spa experience with your partner and provides an extensive range of hydrotherapy, aromatherapy and massage treatments that encourages guests to indulge their senses and refine the art of relaxation. My mission to relax started as soon as I met Michelle Randle (host and proprietor along with husband Kane) who greeted a late, bedraggled and stressed-out city journo with a sincerely warm lingering handshake and a promise to "see us at 10:30 the next morning after breakfast" for our 'treatments'.
Our Chimes encounter began as soon as we entered the sanctuary of our garden suite, heard the bush karaoke from our balcony nestled in the trees and prepared a private spa (all suites have their own open-plan, double spa/jacuzzi with oils and bubble baths provided) - mmm already deliciously decadent. WE could have chosen an ocean-view suite, but this one was just perfect.
The next morning, after a leisurely gourmet breakfast in the Conservatory overlooking Denmark's inlet and the Great Southern Ocean, we walked through the honeysuckle arbor amidst wind chimes, bird feeders and perennials where the hypnotic sound of water greeted us at the entry to the salon spa.
Kane says he and Michelle designed their "menu" to provide spa services for both men and women, individually as well as providing the spa experience for couples. "We want couples to share the relaxation experience together,"he adds. "Women are familiar with some of the benefits of what we offer here but men often miss out because of the "sissy" connotation. The Chimes experience is heightened when you can share it with your partner and most men will feel less threatened if they are enjoying the experience alongside their partners."
To that end Michelle offers a range of therapies that does appeal to both sexes and 90 percent of the products she uses have been freshly made from local ingredients. Most guests choose their own "treatments" from the selection of facials, body scrubs, body wraps, massages, Vichy showers, float tank and steam room options available but Michelle (an experienced beauty therapist, aromatherapist and masseuse) had already worked out our needs. For me it was the heavenly Sugar and Spice Body Scrub while my partner lounged and detoxed in a Steam Bath infused with the aroma of essential oils and chromotherapy.
We both wafted into the massage room next door ~ my skin glowing and feeling as soft as a baby's. Michelle's deft hands concentrated on my Deluxe Facial and neck and shoulder massage while alongside us Yasmin Bartlett demonstrated her healing techniques with my partner as he succumbed to a full body massage with reflexology to tackle his nagging back pain.
Michelle says the Thallosotherapy or marine wraps have proven more popular than she anticipated, which is hardly surprising because she collects the kelp from Denmark's beach and processes the seaweed herself. Most of the lotions used were also freshly prepared by Michelle.
The final stage of our pampering was the Spa Recovery with sustenance option which includes time together in a large spa in a courtyard setting with a delicious freshly prepared light meal and a bottle of champagne. So much for my sightseeing intentions and the Tree-Top walk ~ after lunch we spent the rest of the afternoon cocooned in our suite!
With all that Chimes offers, you might expect a luxury price tag. But tariffs start at $205/couple/night and all salon spa treats are far less pricey than their big-city counterparts ~ a very good reason to escape together for three or four days in a haven of tranquillity.
